Symptoms

The symptoms of ingrown hair include:

Lesions

The ingrown hair is treated as if it were a foreign body by the immune system and the natural response is the development of lesions called papules and pustules.

A papule is a solid elevation of skin that ranges in size from a pinhead to about 10mm in diameter at the widest point. There are no signs of visible fluid in the papule which is one way to distinguish it from pustules.

A pustule on the other hand, exhibit a reddened base and a somewhat white to yellow pus-filled tip. The color of the tip is an indication of the presence of necrotic inflammatory cells.

Slight to Severe Discomfort

Discomfort or pain in the affected region caused by the inflammatory response of the immune system is one indication of ingrown hairs. Minor itching may also occur as the body reacts to the foreign object.

Presence of Embedded Hairs

Often it is quite possible to view the ingrown hairs just beneath the surface of the skin in the area of the papule or pustule.

Discoloration

The affected area typically gets darker than the surrounding skin and this is referred to as hyperpigmentation. Skin color is determined by the amount of brown pigment, called melanin, that is present. Hyperpigmentation occurs when inflammation causes an overproduction of melanin in the affected area.

Often symptoms of ingrown hairs in the pubic region can cause people to think that they may have contracted herpes. It is always wise to check with your doctor. We will be discussing this in an upcoming issue.
